PALENQUE: Just before setting off for our day visit to PALENQUE, we snap a few shots of the swimming pool of the hotel. They have successfully reproduced the colours and environment of AGUAS AZUL which we plan on visiting the next day if we decide to move further into CHIAPAS… The unforgetable and mysterious PALENQUE. Christine andChristian had been here in 1990. Some additional parts of the city have been recovered from the jungle, but the site remains as it was back then. PALENQUE is a 14 square kilometre Mayan city for the most part still hidden in a very dense jungle. The visit of the central palace, with the recognisable tower, leads into tunnels and chambers. In their time, all the buildings were covered with carved stuco. Some of the carvings can still be seen. Download some of the pictures and open them using a photo editor. The high quality of the pictures will allow you to zoom in on some of the carvings and get a close look at them. Notice the forehead of the Mayan Indians as depicted in the carvings (hpim0255). They achieved this by reshaping the heads of their babies at birth. They would place the baby's head between two planks tied together on one end by rope. Pressure was then applied to bring the other end of the planks together, forcing the head to take a slanted shape. This was achieved without Aspirin or Tylenol!
