CATEMACO to PALENQUE: Its a long drive from CATEMACO to PALENQUE. We pass several military road blocks and ask questions regarding the situation in Chiapas. Apparently, everything is quiet. The military road blocks are there to keep an eye on the goods that are transported from South to North and vice versa.We are on a road that lead directly into Guatemala, and their is apparently a lot of trafficking. One soldier asks us our destination. When we say Chiapas and San Cristobal de las Casas, he replies enthusiastically that he is from there and adds that we are more then six hours from Palenque, our destination for the day. We thought we were only two hours away! The kids disappointedly sink in one of the multiple seats they can choose from in the back of the Voyager. Maela puts on her MP3 player, and Brice switches his gameboy on… We enter EL ESTADO DE CHIAPAS and begin to discover the fantastic scenery: Emerald green forests, and pleasant warm temperatures for winter… Brice discovers the wonderful scenery of his Gameboy… We finally arrive at our hotel: The Chan Kah Resort. It wasn't as far as announced by the soldier. We were in fact just three hours away. What a place! We snap a few pictures of the hotel and of our "private" swimming pool, before taking a dip. The gardens of the hotel are stunning. See the size of the Sacred Tree! That's Christine standing under it. We notice an unwelcome guest in the bungalow: A one and a half inch spider… During the night we are woken by a beast hollering in the jungle. Christian calls the reception, thinking its a leopard, hoping to get some pictures. We are told its a hollering monkey! We try and get some pictures of him in the trees the next day. Listen and watch the film at the bottom of the page. The sound you hear above the voices of people talking is the monkey hollering… Amazing for such a small animal!
